Francois: Top-engineer quits his job to become a baker

This successful engineer had it all: great career, great salary, great opportunities. Despite all that he quit his job to become a baker. Here’s why.

Francois was a high-profile telecom engineer from the Netherlands who travelled the world for his dream job. He had a great salary, lots of responsibilities, fantastic opportunities – everything that is regarded as an “amazing job”. However, at some point he realized: Something is missing. His job just didn’t feel fulfilling anymore. That’s when he decided to quit his engineering job – after 23 years.

Why Francois quit his engineering job

Francois always had a passion for baking. He grew up in France and his mother loved baking and cooking. “If I wanted to spend time with my Mum, it had to be in the kitchen. That’s how I learned a lot about baking.” However, doing it professionally was a different story. Crazy working hours, less money, no “safety” anymore as he is working for himself now. For Francois all this doesn’t matter. Because baking gives him energy.

Engineer vs. baker – the biggest difference

Waking up at 4am in the morning, physical work versus sitting on a desk, being self-employed versus working for a huge company: Quitting his engineering job changed all areas of his life.

What he enjoys most is the close connection he has with the miller who grinds the flour for all his products – and who shares his passion and scientific approach to crop, grinding and baking.

Francois’ morning routine

“I get up between 4am and 6am. This is a very special time of the day as it’s still dark and quiet. So I start my day listening to the silence of the night. And I enjoy a sky full of stars (or clouds, as I live in the Netherlands). This peaceful and mindful moment energizes me.”

Shall I quit my job?

How do you know if you should quit your job? For Francois that’s easy. “If your job isn’t energizing you anymore, it’s time to quit.” The worst mistake in his perception is not making any decision. Because then other people will decide for you.

All the best on your new adventure, Francois! Keep on going, keep on inspiring and keep on baking these incredible loaves of bread! For everyone who would like to try his big range of bread, pasteis de nata (yes, that’s Portuguese) and cakes, head to the Molen bakkerij d’Arke in Oostkapelle, NL.
